Creating B2B enterprise applications is more complex than developing B2C consumer apps, akin to building an aircraft versus a car. This increased complexity, especially in the regulated healthcare industry with multiple stakeholders and unique business needs, calls for a systematic design process.

At Episource, we understand the challenges and have crafted a solution with our first design system, Signet. This fully customized UI toolkit allows us to streamline our SaaS product design as we expand in the healthcare industry.

Signet is an all-in-one platform that integrates our design principles for usability, accessibility, and compliance into every component, from typography, color, layout, and style guides to UI components with code snippets and coding conventions. This not only facilitates collaboration among our team but also helps us grow together as we continue to shape the future of healthcare SaaS.

Signet Language

Our design system is a language that both designers and engineers can speak to align on how applications are built out. Signet is built based on MUI, Material Design (originally referred to as and codenamed “Quantum Paper”) which is inspired by the physical world and its textures, including how they reflect light and cast shadows.

Key characteristics:

• Use shadows to convey hierarchy
• Use bold colors (primary color & accent color)
• Utilize whitespace and Incorporate motion

Signet Methodology

Influenced by our small but mighty design team’s motto, ‘Think big but start small’, Signet uses Atomic design which is a methodology inspired by chemistry and composed of five distinct stages (Atoms, Molecules, Organisms, Templates, Pages) working together to form interface design systems in a more deliberate and hierarchical manner.

Atomic Design Methodology

Key characteristics:

Focus on reusability by splitting UI parts into the smallest elements possible to have better reusability.
More efficient and faster workflow by using the amzn/style-dictionary, Figma design tokens, semantic versioning, and namespacing.

Signet Mission & Goal

We believe that one of the most important industries for humanity is healthcare. Our design mission is to deliver human-centered and research data-driven and tech-enabled innovative design solutions to create meaningful products that bring positive impacts to the industry.
